There is no shortage of the types of MR16 bulbs available on the market. The MR16 High Intensity Discharge Bulbs (HID) are just one of many of its kind that boast of clear lighting and long-life but unlike other bulbs, MR16 HID bulbs have the track record to back up those claims.  

High intensity discharge bulbs are known to allow for the highest efficiency and long-life of any other bulb available, saving 75 to 90 percent of energy compared to regular bulbs. Through the use of electric arcs, high intensity discharge bulbs are able to give off an intense amount of light. However, they do take up to ten minutes to fully turn on because of the time needed to establish the electric arcs. This is reminiscent of fluorescent bulbs.

They are not ideal for situations where they would need to be turned on and off in a hurry. These bulbs are also not cheap. Retailing between fifty to well over one hundred dollars, MR16 high intensity discharge bulbs (HID) can feel like they're burning a hole in the proverbial pocketbook. However, it is important to consider the longevity of the bulbs as well. Because they are made to last, they do not need to be replaced as often as cheaper, less specific bulbs may need to be.
